Update

So I guess there's nothing I can do about my Flickr account. They responded to my email giving me a generic message, just how I thought they would, saying that I "violated terms set in their user guidelines". I've always moderated all of my content and set anything not suited for younger viewers as private. I also don't use flickr for commercial use. I just use it to post images on my blog, which I don't use for commercial use and I don't sell anything. I responded asking for the exact instance that I've violated terms in their guidelines so I can have an internet law lawyer go over it. It's a good thing that in my line of work I have access to these kind of resources. I'm hoping that I don't have to resort to legal action. It just upsets me because all of my blog content was on my flickr account. The nearly 4 years of blog images were all linked from Flickr.

I'm now thinking of buying webspace and starting my own website so I wouldn't have to deal with stuff like this. What if blogger suddenly decides to censor my blog or delete it? I'd be devastated! I have been considering creating my own site and possibly making a members section for...well, you know. I guess I just don't know where to start. After all this, it seems like it's a sign.

Wow! Hope you get your pictures back from Flickr..and even statutory damages haha
It's really disgusting customer service to censor pictures like that without even a warning first!

If you decide to move your blog to your own domain.. and since you are not sure where to start, I recommend you DotClear [1] a very nice and easy blog engine that works with all php/mysql hosts out there (which are plenty cheap and reliable).

If you want I can host you for free, as I already manage some servers part of my job. Of course no strings attached since the most important thing is that you get your own domain by yourself first and then point to any host of your choice.
I can set up a weekly compressed dump of your database directly sent to your email so that in the case I fail (I won't but eh! I'm a third-party.. so never trust me ;)) you have all the cards in your hands and can move whenever you decide, by just pointing your domain to another host, import back the database to another dotclear instance.. and the readers won't even notice.

Well if you are interested just email me to h98eg3unwoy5qv7@jetable.com (temporary redirecting address so that I do not get spammed)

You'd think since you paid for the pro account things would be good. I feel for you, I hope you'll be able to get something out of this mess.

If your looking for a hosting company, I've used webmasters for years now. Pretty good features and it's cheap too!

What was the violation in the terms of the FLICKR account? Were there photos of you having sex on there? If so, that may have been the reason?
Nude is ok, but sex they may close the account for that reason? this is only a guess...

Very disappointing move for Flickr! I hope you are able to find a new hosting solution soon.

that really sucks man. i think it would be best to have your own website, at least you'll have full control over it.

you can move to wordpress.org and have your own self-hosted blog. However,it is not free because you have to pay for webhosting and also for domain. Go and get tiggahtigz.com or .net Domain is really cheap,$10 or cheaper than that.

Another offer for some free hosting if you want it, let me know.

Please keep us up-to-date regarding this issue. Many people rely on Flickr and would probably like to know the risks. I have been reading your blog from day 1 and I can certainly say that you followed all the rules as I understand them on flickr. I would hate to think you were the target for someone to get revenge by making a complaint about something that is not true. BTW, I back up my blog, electronically and then by hard copy.

that sucks man. i'd be so sad too. i hope they recover ur pics and its just all a mis understanding. 'cause it would seem kinda weird for them to ban you now when you've been uploading for years now.

The only reason I registered with Flickr was to have access to your photos. As you said, you very clearly separated the general content from that "special and specific" which should have satisfied any concerns about which viewers had access. Bad move on their part. Just let us know where your next photo home will be. Hope you can retrieve your galleries...some really excellent work and it would be a real shame if it were lost. As you say, maybe this is a sign that it's time to step up to the next level. I am sure that there are many of us that will be watching to see what develops.
All the best.

Yes, having your own domain is a good idea. You should look into aplus.net for a web server. It's cheap and has a lot of bandwidth. Also, you should look into wordpress. Aplus offers a service where it will automatically wordpress for you. What's great about wordpress is that you can download plugins to customize the blog, whether it be UI or for privacy issues. I know that your blog is full of memories, so wordpress can also import an entries from an existing blog. I'm not sure if it's built in already, but there are always plugins out there that can do that. I use wordpress for my blog and it's definitely a good and powerful tool. I'm sure you'll like it.

Good luck in reversing Flickr's decision. I hope everything will be sorted out soon.

Is is possible that they have voluntarily deleted all your pictures? If it is the case, I just can't believe it. Then it becomes a matter of basic censorship, and that's unbelievable. What kind of bastards could decide, for no reason, to supress the memories, experiences, thoughts and sensations of a person, whoever this person might be, just because they decided it wasn't propper or appropriate or whatever... That really makes me crazy. And the fact that they probably made it out of coyness or patent homophobia just makes it worse. I hope you'll be able to find all your pictures back, and if there's anything we can do for it, just let us know. En attendant (comme on dit en France), fuck flicker!
